Keep It Down to a Dull Roar

Ah, the Lions. They’ve been the punching bag of the NFL for the past decade now and things aren’t looking any better. Matthew Stafford and Co. will give it another shot. Maybe he can conjure up something halfway effective with Calvin Johnson, who has yet to achieve his full potential in the league. Kevin Smith has proven he can be effective when he’s healthy. Rookie Jahvid Best out of Cal could prove to be an effective second option as well.

Like any other year, the Lions will go as far as their defense will take them. That seems odd to say but it’s true. The Lions were dead last in the league in yards and points allowed per game. Their pass defense is dreadful. Their rush defense will get some help with the drafting of Nebraska hoss Ndamukong Suh. Still, he alone win’t serve as the antidote for this poor excuse for a defense.

The Lions once again will finish dead last in the NFC North with a record of 3-13.

Sims, White, Stafford, Johnson Practice With Lions

Quarterback Matthew Stafford and wide receiver Calvin Johnson practiced today as the Lions worked out for the first time since the Thanksgiving game against Green Bay.

Stafford played through a left shoulder injury against the Packers. Johnson played through knee and hand injuries. Both should play Sunday at Cincinnati.

“Neither guy was 100%, but both of them came out and both of them were able to get on the practice field today,” coach Jim Schwartz said. “I’m optimistic both of them would be without limitation on Sunday – at this time of the year, about as full speed as you can be. Everybody’s banged up and beat up a little bit.”

Defensive end Dewayne White (toe) and linebacker Ernie Sims (hamstring) also practiced. But safety Kalvin Pearson (hamstring) and offensive lineman Daniel Loper (back) did not.

Lions’ Stafford practices for 2nd day in row

Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford practiced for the second straight day today — a good sign, considering he couldn’t practice after he last tested his injured right knee two weeks ago. He was listed officially as limited.

The Lions will continue to monitor Stafford’s progress day to day before deciding whether he will play Sunday against St. Louis. Stafford, who has missed the last two games, declined to comment.

“We’ll wait and see,” coach Jim Schwartz said. “There’s still a long way to go until Sunday, and there’s a lot of hurdles we need to cross before then.”

Wide receiver Calvin Johnson, who has missed one game with an injured right knee, did not practice for the second straight day. But he worked out on his own and said he was still optimistic he could play. He does not need a full week of practice.

Lions QB Matthew Stafford hasn’t been told his season’s in jeopardy

Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford said Monday that no one is telling him his season is in jeopardy, despite a report that the team is worried he might need knee surgery.

Stafford suffered a right knee injury – reportedly a partially dislocated kneecap – Oct. 4 at Chicago. He has missed the past two games.

He went through a limited practice Wednesday. He said afterward that the main concern was swelling and whether he would be able to practice again the next day, and he did not practice the next day.

ESPN reported Sunday that Stafford had swelling and the Lions ordered a new MRI, which they forwarded to Dr. James Andrews of Birmingham, Ala., fearing Stafford might need surgery. General manager Martin Mayhew dismissed that report as “gossip,” and Stafford said he was not worried about surgery.
